The vicissitudes of nature - proof that life ain't fair

Arkansas mum gives birth to 18th child

December 19, 2008, 12:37 pm

An Arkansas woman has given birth to her 18th child.

Michelle Duggar delivered the baby girl by Caesarean section on Thursday at Mercy Medical Centre in Rogers. The baby, named Jordyn-Grace Makiya Duggar, weighed 3.26kg and was 51cm long.

"The ultimate Christmas gift from God," said Jim Bob Duggar, the father of the 18 children. "She's just absolutely beautiful, like her mom and her sisters."

The Duggars now have 10 sons and eight daughters.

Jim Bob Duggar said Michelle started having contractions on Wednesday night. She needed the Caesarean section, her third, because the baby was lying sideways. Jim Bob said both baby and mother were doing well on Thursday night.

"We both would love to have more," he said.

The US cable network TLC broadcasts a weekly show about the Duggars, called Seventeen and Counting. Chris Finnegan of TLC - which handles public relations for the Duggar family - said the show's name would be updated to account for the latest addition to the family. He said TLC also will air a show on Monday on the baby's delivery.

Jim Bob Duggar is 43, a year older than his wife. Their oldest child, Joshua, is 20.

The other Duggar children, in between Joshua and Jordyn-Grace, are Jana, 18; John-David, 18; Jill, 17; Jessa, 16; Jinger, 14; Joseph, 13; Josiah, 12; Joy-Anna, 11; Jeremiah, nine; Jedidiah, nine; Jason, eight; James, seven; Justin, six; Jackson, four; Johannah, three; and Jennifer, one.

"Our whole family is excited about Jordyn's addition to our family," Jim Bob Duggar said. "She's just perfect in every way."

I have to agree...its crazy...over here in canada they have a show. Its absolutely obscene the amount of kids they have. But at least they aren't some crack heads that can't take care of their kids....only good thing in that situation.

A show? I hope they're being paid for appearing on the show. In Australia there was a single mum with four kids to four different fathers .. on welfare, none of the dads paying child support. She was pregnant and planned to have more. That made loads of people angry and calling for her to have her tubes tied.

I don't see an answer to this over-production and can't afford to feed them problem. If you don't give welfare, the mother and kids starve and rely on charity, or worse, but heck ... to purposely have so many kids as a single mum by the age of 19 ... ugh.

Yes they are paid I'm sure. We north americans are all into reality TV or voyuerism. Its on the same channel (TLC) that has other shows such as John and Kate plus 8, which is about a family who experienced infertility and then had twins and then sextuplets. Also a show about a family who the parents are dwarfs and then they have 4 children on of which is also a dwarf. I think they all get paid extremely well, they are all going on vacations, doing major renovations to their houses and living quite well, when they started the show they all seemed to be struggling. I guess whatever works for them....but I do know the shows all have a large following. Look up TLC- The Learning Channel for more info on this. Maybe you can get a show????? LOL

No!! No show for us. We did have Channel Seven who found us at the SI forum, about to hop on the plane to Mumbai with us, to follow our journey fro a documentary about our surrogacy experiences. Fortunately Bob pulled me into line and beat the journalist out of me. It is a private matter. I think exposing ourselves in a book is enough ... and we can maintain complete control over what is published. you can't do that with a reality TV show or documentary.
